Gateways integrates two specific program models. The first one is the well established "status model". The other is our "earn and learn" program. We chose these programs specifically because they best address our primary objective, which is independent living preparation. The goal of these programs is to simulate the adult world they will soon be entering. The world in which education, good values, hard work and productive behavior should lead to a degree of reward and success directly equated to the effort put forth by the individual. Both programs are designed to be pro-active. Our dedicated staff work with the children to ensure they are given every opportunity to improve their status.
The simple, yet very affective, status model is becoming increasingly popular in schools and group homes nationwide. It is a three card system using a green, yellow, or red card to monitor each child's progress, behavior, and involvement within the home. The status and progress of each child can be used to determine if a reward or a consequence is in order. For example, if a child has earned the status "red", the staff will then decide what disciplinary action is needed to correct the offense. If a child has earned a "green" status they will not only be able to enjoy all of the privileges provided by Gateways, but will also be offered access extra freedoms and activities.
Children will be given the opportunity to earn a better card through extra credit activities (trainings, community service, etc.) The card status of each girl shall be reviewed and adjusted as needed on a weekly basis.
The earn and learn program is completely voluntary and pro-active. The primary focus is to instill the concept that hard work and education will lead to better life choices and opportunities. It will also encourage the girls to utilize the life-long lessons of money management and self-sufficiency.
In this program, children are given chances within the home and community to earn financial compensation. These opportunities include completing basic household chores without cue, helping in our "Gateways Garden", or even group participation.
The money children earn will be put into mock bank accounts with a percentage used for "wants" and a larger percentage set aside for personal savings. This will not only instill the value of a hard earned money, but give the girls the financial jumpstart and wisdom they will need when they enter independent living.
